The Team at Mahekal Beach Resort is counting the days until we can welcome you back to our stunning oceanside Riviera Maya escape. Our rooms, restaurants, and spa will be fresh, fluffed, and ready for you to visit soon.
Until we have the privilege of welcoming you back, the staff of Revive Spa at Mahekal has some recommendations for a host of very indulgent at-home spa treatments you can easily use to refresh and revitalize. Read on, and get ready to pamper yourself.
A humble shower brush is good for so much more than a soapy scrub. Many spa professionals recommend an exfoliation technique called “dry brushing.” Before you shower or moisturize, run the bristles of your shower brush over your extremities to liberate any dry skin. Begin with your feet, and move upward toward your heart, then do the same for your arms and back. Before long, your skin will be refreshed, your pores will be relaxed, and soaps and moisturizers will be more effective. So will your suntan lotion on your next adventure!
Hand washing and sanitizing is a big part of everyone’s routine lately. Sadly, this vital hygienic habit can leave skin raw and chapped. So give your hands a little TLC. Spend a few minutes massaging a rich, high-quality moisturizing creme into your hands. Look for one with lanolin, shea butter, and/or vitamin E to really help heal the damage antibacterial soaps and alcohol-heavy sanitizers can leave behind. After all, you’re going to need those hands to hold your Margarita once you get here.
Our Favorite At-Home Facial
A nourishing skin treatment is a great way to refresh your energy, attitude, and outlook. These services are some of the most asked-for here at Revive Spa. Thankfully, there are some great at-home facial treatments you can self-apply that go a long way toward putting your best face forward. Here’s a simple recipe for one we love.
Honey Face Scrub
2 teaspoons honey
1–2 teaspoons finely ground rolled oats
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Mix together ground oats, lemon juice, honey, and tea tree oil In a small bowl. Apply to face to create a mask. Leave on the skin for 10-15 minutes. Remove the mask with cold water and a washcloth. Relish your refreshed, beautiful skin.
The hype is real: Coconut oil is everything its hard, fuzzy shell is cracked up to be. Swishing a little around after brushing your teeth can help knock out things your toothbrush may have missed. A little applied to rough skin will help smooth it over. But if you REALLY want to feel the power of this magical elixir (outside of one of our refreshing piña coladas), then make a coconut-oil hair mask. Slowly warm a few tablespoons of unrefined, virgin coconut oil in a clean cooking pan until melted. Once it cools a bit (but before it solidifies) work it through your hair with a wide comb, starting at the scalp. Then, wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap for anywhere from 30 minutes to overnight and wash normally afterward. You’ll be blown away by the results.
We all know how much we perk up after our morning coffee. But not as many of us are clued in to just how much good these magical means can do on the outside, as well. That’s where this homemade coffee scrub comes in. Now that you have your coconut oil, warm about a half-cup of it in the pan you used previously. Let it cool. Before it solidifies, mix in a cup each of fresh-ground coffee and sugar. Stir, but ensure that the oil is cooled enough so that the sugar doesn’t dissolve. Add in some fresh vanilla extract, cinnamon, or a few drops of your favorite fragrant essential oil if you like. When the oil solidifies, scoop it into a Mason jar or other airtight container. Then, just use a few dollops of this spirited scrub during your morning shower to really help smooth over those rough spots. It may even help firm up the skin! You’ll be beach-ready in no time flat.
Balance for Body and Mind
Yoga is a popular shaping and toning discipline, and for good reason. It not only helps firm up muscles, improve breathing, and promote flexibility, but practitioners swear by its restorative benefits for mental health. And who couldn’t use a tried-and-true stress-buster these days? So until you’re able to join us for a morning sun salutation on our white-sand beach, the Revive Spa staff recommends laying out your mat at home. There are many online courses that can help Yoga devotées of every ability level. So if you’re looking to flex the tension away, fire up your device, navigate to a guide that corresponds to your experience level, and flex your fitness.
There may be no more important wellness practice than restful sleep. Not only does awakening from a healthful slumber feel great, but adequate sleep is necessary for the proper function of both body, and mind. Sadly, many people struggle with proper sleep. Getting into a routine of bedtime behaviors can help. By consistently heading for bed and waking up at the same times every day, limiting pre-bedtime blue-light exposure (e.g. phones, TV, or e-readers), and/or having a nice relaxing hot tea (traditional Mexican healers are known to prescribe drinking chamomile tea with a teaspoon of honey before bed), you can better prepare yourself for good sleep. Of course, if your bedroom isn’t optimized for good rest, you may want to make some tweaks. Consider hanging some blackout curtains, using an aromatherapy diffuser (lavender, vanilla, and orange are quite relaxing), or even using a white-noise machine to help lull you off to dreamland.
