Five Things to Do in Playa del Carmen This Spring

Playa del Carmen has quickly become one of Mexico’s top vacation destinations, with many miles of gorgeous tropical beaches, fascinating inland tours, and an electric nightlife. The weather is almost always great, but from December to the end of May, lower temperatures with less rain and humidity create the perfect chance to get out and experience the best of the area’s natural wonders. Here’s a short list of the best warm-weather activities to enjoy this spring.

Tour Mayan Sites

The ancient Mayan sites are a must-see no matter the time of year, but the experience is best in springtime. The major site to visit is world-famous Chichén Itzá. Tours are available from the city, and though it’s a hike, the experience is unforgettable. Also consider the mystical Mayan port city in Tulum and the climbable Nohoch Mul pyramid in Cobá, both quicker trips from Playa del Carmen than from Cancún.

Take a Swim in a Cenote

Even closer than the ancient Mayan sites are the scattered cenotes that surround Playa del Carmen. If you didn’t know, cenotes are natural pools of water — sometimes quite deep — that were in caves until the ground above them collapsed. These beautiful natural wonders are great for swimming, relaxing, or viewing rock formations through crystal clear water. Even the best ones, such as Jardin del Eden and Cristalino, are around $5 USD to enter.

Go Shopping and Try Street Food

Spring is a great time to stroll down Calle Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian-friendly street a block or so off the beach that runs the length of downtown. There are loads of shops on each side, from designer brands and global chains to boutique shops and souvenir stalls. Restaurants are also plentiful. Side streets offer many discoveries, and large intersections will have street food, such as elotes, esquites, and marquesitas, which you don’t want to miss.

Relax or Have Fun at the Beach

Late winter and spring offer the best beach weather of the year in Playa del Carmen. When staying at Mahekal Beach Resort, it’s easy to enjoy the coastline — the property boasts 920 feet of white-sand beach just steps from the accommodations and facilities. For more fun in the sun, head to the Dive Center at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, where you can arrange diving and snorkeling tours, or any water activity you desire.

Visit Cozumel

Make the most of the lovely weather by taking a ferry to Cozumel, an island not far off the coast. Before Playa del Carmen became a destination in itself, it was known to tourists for its ferry service to this tropical wonderland. The 45-minute boat rides start at 135 pesos (about $7.15 USD) roundtrip, and the island offers incredible beaches, some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world, and car rentals so you can explore on your own.
