Planning a Winter Trip to Playa del Carmen: When to Go and What to Do
You already know that Playa del Carmen is one of the world’s most exquisite wintertime destinations, with its balmy weather, crystalline Caribbean waters, and shopping on Quinta Avenida — but do you know when to schedule your visit? Check out our guide to planning a trip to the Riviera Maya in December, January, or February.

Playa del Carmen weather usually averages around the mid-seventies (Fahrenheit), so if you’re planning on soaking up the sunshine, you’ll be fine visiting during any month in winter. If you prefer moderately warmer weather, both December and February temperatures hover around a high of 82 and a low of 70 degrees, while January drops to a high of 81 and a low of 68. Humidity and wind are consistently low throughout the winter, as is the chance of precipitation, which is 8 to 9%, so these variables needn’t factor into your decision at all.
Winter is a very popular time to visit Playa del Carmen, but you can still choose between busier and less busier periods, depending on your preference. For a vibrant scene and buzzy crowds at the beaches and bars, come during late December or late February. This coincides with schools’ winter and spring breaks, meaning a lively nightlife scene and plenty of events to enjoy. For a more tranquil escape, visit during early December, January, or early February, when most people are still at work or school.
Activities to Enjoy
The winter activities are generally the same as the activities enjoyed during the rest of the year, like swimming, snorkeling, or diving in the cenotes on warmer days, as well as shopping, dining, clubbing, and visiting historic sites. If you come in December or February, you’ll also enjoy the privilege of being able to attend special events and displays. In Christmas season, don’t miss the processions and Nativity shows (read our full guide to Christmastime in the Riviera Maya), and in February, catch the colorful Carnival parade.
